Not enough research
Part of the book is true.I have done a lot of research on this story. The same story was published 4 years before this was to of happened.Author has taken a folk tale and made a fortune by telling half truths.I am his great nephew.I have records to back this up.

Fascinating
This is one of the most interesting accounts of a local legend that I've ever read. Lyle's explanation of what probably happened is brilliant. A great read.

A Space on the Side of the Road
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (16 February, 1996)
Author: Kathleen Stewart
Average review score:

Only your opinion!
I am furious with K Stewarts portrayal of West Virginians in a nonsense scrip she calls a book. The context of this gibberish can be analyzed as a misconception of the transfer of her intelligence to the posterior end of her lap.

Unamerican Nightmares
In one of the most profoundly affecting social science books I have read, Kathleen Stewart adopts a radical and poetic language to summon up the inarticulacies of people in a world got down. In an environment surrounded by ghosts, lost hopes and debris from other times, the denizens of this space manufacture tales, phantasmogoric stories which conjure up powerful forces beyond their control. It is through these stories that they try to gain possession of their own lives and environment in a capitalist America which systematically disempowers and uses up people and resources.

By avoiding leftist reified and conservative discourse, the impact of these forces on ordinary people is relayed in a humane and grounded fashion, devoid of meta-theoretical abstractions, which preserves their dignity and shares their insights. Kathleen's imaginative and empathetic approach cannot be too highly commended, for it is this which ultimately provokes an anger that working people should be treated with such disdain, by middle class academics as well as by capital.

Blenko Glass: 1962-1971 Catalogs
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Leslie A. Pina, Leslie Piña, and Leslie A. Piina
Average review score:

Good reference book for collectors
I began collecting Blenko glass shortly before I bought Ms. Pina's book earlier this year. I refer to it often when I am searching internet auctions. Initially it helped me determine whether a price was in line with the fair market value. Lately I have been using it to determine to my own satisfaction whether an unmarked piece truely is Blenko. The pictures are very good quality. The only drawback to the book is that is it woefully short on text. It would have been beneficial if the book contained some in depth discussion of Blenko craftmanship and how to distinguish their products from the other WV glassmakers, especially since they all had a tendancy to copy one another.

Fundamentals of Physiology: A Human Perspective
Published in Hardcover by Brooks Cole (01 January, 1994)
Authors: Lauralee Sherwood and West Virginia University
Average review score:

Doesn't stand alone.
This text was informative for the student just begining their anatomy and physiology education. However I believe it was put to best use when combined with another anatomy text (i.e.Tortora's Principles of Human Anatomy). These two texts are a powerhouse of information. They play well off of eachother. Where Tortora lacks in technical explanation and precise description Sherwood excells. Where Sherwood fails in graphic visual description Tortora more than makes up the difference. As a visual learner it was difficult to fully grasp certain concepts without another text to refer to. I believe for someone who learns best from verbal description this book would be incredibly beneficial. I used this text in a community college, pre-nursing, anatomy and physiology course and although it was helpful, it provided more of a complete picture when combined with the other text (Tortora). Overall I did find it more helpful as a reference resource than a teaching tool.

Hiking West Virginia
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (April, 2003)
Authors: Steven Carroll and Mark Miller
Average review score:

a bit disappointed
This book covers a lot of territory and hikes, and it gives good directions on how to get to the hikes and how to follow the trail, but I was disappointed. Although it's 258 pages long, it does not provide a whole lot of background information on what you are going to see on the hike--just where to turn left or right, etc. How about what I'm going to see other that just say "there is an overlook?" What kind of overlook? What am I going to see? There are quick mentions of a few plants and animals that may be seen, but certainly no background on them to help me identify them or know about their natural history. Very little, if any, mention of human history is provided.

The contents shows 70 hikes, but as you look through the book you find multiple hikes in several areas that could have been identified as just one longer hike. In all it identifies 46 sites to take hikes in.

It is a nice book to direct you to some good hikes in WV, but don't expect much more than that.

The Rugged Southern Appalachia: Hatfield-McCoy Feud : Biographical and Historical
Published in Paperback by Ginwill Pub Co (01 February, 1997)
Authors: Willard Mounts and Beatrice Brandhorst
Average review score:

More could be said
I am a direct descendent of the Hatfields of West Virginia. My 3rd great granddfather migrated west and settled in the town of Mossyrock, WA. The good in this book is its focus on the lore of the two families. The stories have been passed down from generation to generation. Who did what to whom and how they related to each other. The bad is its lack of attention to the sociology of the feud: was it really family honor or is the poverty of the region to blame? What about the federal governments interference? We hear so much about the ATF/FBI at Waco, but the federal government was a critical factor in the feud in its later years. My grandfather moved to Washington because he faced potential arrest by the federal government.

The Snowshoe Story: Business, Politic and the Judiciary in West Virginia
Published in Hardcover by McClain Printing Company (January, 1997)
Author: S. Franklin Burford
Average review score:

Learn from the mistakes of others
This book is about as good as a presentation can get, when the subject is politico-business in a small rural state. At times dry, owing to the details Burford gives, this book is generally emotional as the author recounts his dealings.

The tale of the rise, conflicts, and fall of an Attorney-turned-big-businessman as he makes millions. Only to lose it through the greed and corruption of those in power in political and banking circles.

Read this book, if for no other reason than to learn what can happen when business and politics are badly mixed!

Thomas and Launia, Their Ancestors and Descendants: A History of One Branch of the Lincoln County, West Virginia McClures
Published in Paperback by Ritamelia Pr (October, 1994)
Author: Drollene P. Brown
Average review score:

Well arranged and well written
Most geneology books are just a listing of the people, where they are from, and who they married. This book however gives the stories, traditions, and tales behind the lives of this Lincoln County family. This family history begins like most families do. Two people fall in love and create a a lineage that still continues today as strong as when Thomas and Launia began.

West Virginia Ufo's: Close Encounters in the Mountain State
Published in Paperback by Headline Books (October, 1994)
Author: Bob Teets
Average review score:

A worthwhile yet frustrating book whch almost self-destructs
This is an odd work indeed. On the positive side, it provides UFO researchers with valuable information on the many WVA sightings, both historical and comtemporary, with first-hand investigations. The negatives, however, are significant: less than tight writing style, inappropriate forays (by the author) into amateur hypnosis of percepients of UFOs, and, most troubling of all, an ending which has seemingly no connection with the rest of the book, whereby Mr. Teets goes on a tirade attacking (especially) Dr. John Mack and his work with "abductees" , a subject not mentioned in the body of the work. As if this was not bad enough, Mr. Teets' leaves us with this pearl of wisdom...to "pray"

West Virginia University: Success Expect It, Orientation 1
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (August, 1999)
Author: T. Anne Hawkins
Average review score:

A good book for new students
All freshman non-engineering students of West Virginia University are required to purchase this textbook for their Orientation I class. While I can't say that I'm a big fan of the class, the book is very helpful. It introduces many of the concepts of college life, including how to do well on tests, how to rent an apartment, money management, stress relief techniques, and many other topics.
